Our Rules
In the Hash it is believed that there are no rules, but there are traditions. Two incontrovertible rules exist:
- 01The Grand Master / Hash Master is always right.
- 02When in doubt as to the actions of the Grand Master, refer to Rule 1.
Abuja’s first hiking group and its least serious running club, since 1997.
Hashing began in December 1938 in the Federated Malay States (now Malaysia), where British colonial soldiers and expatriates met on Monday evenings for a run patterned after the traditional paper chase of “hares and hounds” — followed by an evening of socialising.
The Abuja Hash House Harriers, famously described as a drinking club with a running problem, is one of about 40 active kennels in Nigeria. It was founded on 15th November 1997 by expatriates from the Lagos Hash, led by a hasher known as Father Abraham.
Our trails are mostly hilly and bushy, offering a mix of challenge and fun. Each run features walking and running trails set by volunteer hares, coordinated by the Hare Raiser. Over time, Abuja H3 has birthed five kennels and is nurturing two more.

The year has its own rhythm — themed runs, pink trails and the occasional waterfall.
October is special — every Saturday features themed runs including Independence Day, Breast Cancer Awareness, Treasure Hunt and Birthday celebrations.
Last Saturday of every month celebrates all hashers born that month with additional beer, refreshments and On-On After parties.
Green-themed run commemorating St. Patrick's feast day, usually around March 17th with hashers in traditional green outfits.
A pink-powered run dedicated to supporting Breast Cancer awareness. Hashers hit the trail in pink, showing solidarity with those suffering from cancer and with survivors.
Annual September adventure exploring city waterfalls with 3–4km hikes, therapeutic waterfall showers and relaxation.
Held on the last Saturday of October and initiated by the expatriates who founded Abuja H3 in 1997. The kennel has carried on the tradition every year since.
Turn up on a Saturday. Bring shoes you don’t love, water, and no ego. Newcomers are always welcome in the circle.
